My Practice

Hello!  I am Dr. Julia Hitch and I am honored to share with you a little bit about myself and my therapy practice so that you can determine if I might be an ideal fit for you or your child. Fit is an essential component of therapy and I encourage you to look broadly and trust your wisdom about what’s right for you.

I am passionate about helping people recognize their power, face down what scares them most, and learn to live values-driven, joyful, and connected lives. I enjoy working with all ages – seeing preschool-aged kids up through adults. I am a research enthusiast and love sharing and applying what we know from science and data to help with the real, daily challenges people in my practice face.

A primary area of expertise is helping people overcome anxieties, fears, obsessions and compulsions, and stress. Anxiety has a way of making both kids and adults alike feel powerless by dictating choices that often make their world small and less joyful. Often people with anxiety and stress come to my practice feeling caught in cycle: they feel so anxious that they avoid the situations that make them nervous or engage in rituals aimed at reducing distress. While these strategies makes sense and offer amazing short-term relief, people often find that their anxiety continues to grow and is getting worse over time. Through exposure-based treatments, I love helping people take steps toward their fears, instead of away, and learn through experience how brave, resilient, and powerful they are.

Another focus of my practice is working with parents. Even under the best of circumstances, parenting can be hard – kids don’t come with manuals, and to make matters worse there are literally thousands of conflicting books and philosophies claiming ownership for the golden solution to any variety of problems. This makes parenting even more confusing and leaves parents in constant doubt wondering if their chosen solutions are actually part of the problem. Parenting can be particularly difficult when your child is having challenges, whether that be with noncompliance, emotional dysregulation, depression, or anxiety. Often parents wonder when they should be stepping in to offer support versus stepping out and letting their child manage. Or, they wonder if they should be providing warmth and empathy or imposing limits and consequences. As a parent, I understand these dilemmas myself! Through my longstanding expertise in behavioral parent training, I love bolstering parents with data on what we know works and helping them approach parenting from a wise, united, values-driven, and confident place.

What you’ll find when you come to my practice is a genuine curiosity about who you are and/or who your child is. What’s working well? What unique strengths exist?  What challenges are present, how did they develop, and what has already been tried? What's happening to make things worse? What’s happening to make things better? Together we develop a treatment plan that honors your wisdom and mines my expertise in a wide-range of evidence-based treatments. When it comes to treatment, I believe that kindness, authenticity, evidence-based interventions that are skillfully chosen and applied, and a professional yet fun environment combine to effectively diminish suffering and increase capacity for joy.
