The Seattle Clinic was born from a series of questions we asked ourselves over many years: What setting would evoke our best therapeutic presence and sustain our passion over the career-span? What combination of endeavors would constitute our ideal professional life? What work culture would be most conducive to our professional and personal growth and fulfillment?

From these questions, a vision emerged of a professional community:

  • committed as much to providing effective, evidence-based psychological treatments as it is compelled by the uniquely human art of therapy

  • tied together as much by professional interests as it is by personal bonds and friendships

  • enriched as much by its members' expertise as it is by their desire to be lifelong learners

  • as passionate about cutting edge research as it is about ancient wisdom

  • defined as much by its common purpose as it is strengthened by its members' independence and autonomy

Kai Scantlin, PsyD
Licensed Psychologist

Dr. Kai Scantlin received her doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2014 from the Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, Il, and completed her pre-doctoral clinical internship at the University of Washington’s Counseling Center. She has received extensive additional training in using Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, and particularly appreciates ACT’s practical, values-based approach to healing and growth.

Dr. Scantlin uses a combination of warmth, curiosity, directness, and respectful humor in her work. She adamantly believes in the individual’s right to self-determination, and she takes a collaborative approach to therapy – she sees you as the only person who can decide what is important to you, and herself as someone who can help you figure out how to get closer to it.

Dr. Scantlin’s undergraduate education is in philosophy, and she sees therapy as a chance to engage in “live-action philosophizing,” with a focus on helping you explore how you engage with yourself and with the world around you. She believes that you have the right, the responsibility, and the capacity to determine who you are and how you fit into your life, and will help you explore the ways in which cultural norms, social expectations, oppression and marginalization, and other such factors have shaped your experiences, while simultaneously exploring the emotional, social, and personal ramifications of choosing to create and live your own life.

Dr. Scantlin works particularly well with people who are willing to engage deeply in the therapeutic process, who are exploring their identity and values, who are interested in understanding their own role in their challenges, and who are willing to make meaningful (and sometimes difficult!) changes in the service of their longer-term goals.

Dr. Scantlin particularly enjoys working with therapists, individuals in the LGBTQIA* community, and those who experience themselves as thinking outside the box.

Dr. Scantlin is happy to treat a wide variety of concerns, although there are some areas in which they have more extensive training and experience. These include:

  • Depression

  • Grief, loss, and bereavement

  • LGBTQIA* concerns

  • Interpersonal/relationship challenges

  • Difficulties with self-understanding and self-compassion

  • Life transitions

  • assume the best of others in the community

  • orient toward ownership and repair during inevitable interpersonal challenges

We hope that this list will be helpful as you consider membership at The Seattle Clinic (TSC) in so far as it illustrates who we are and may clarify whether TSC membership would be mutually beneficial and satisfying. We also recognize that it can be challenging to engage in these behaviors, especially when coming from different backgrounds and levels of experience, and acknowledge that we ourselves routinely struggle to live into these values. Nevertheless, our hope is to join with others who choose to strive toward these values, imperfectly together.
